Health workers strike as one of them dies due to lack of ICU facility
Healthcare workers at Isiolo County Referral Hospital have downed their tools today as they accuse the County of poor working conditions and unfulfilled promises. The workers resorted to the strike following the death of one of them due to the lack of an ICU facility at the Hospital. They have accused the County of playing PR stints with the health of thousands of patients at the hospital as the facility is poorly equipped. “If one of us can die here due to something that can be avoided, what about the thousands who flock here in search of treatment, ” lamented one of the nurses. They stormed the ICU facility demanding answers as to why its not functioning despite it being allegedly officialy launched with pomp and glamour few weeks ago.
The healthcare workers also demanded; payment of their salary arrears of 5 months, provision of protective gear, a better working condition as well, a fully functional ICU facility, and a comprehensive insurance cover amongst other demands. A quick survey of the ICU facility by our team revealed shocking details; no ventilators, lack of patient monitoring machines, feeding tubes, nasogastric tubes, and suction pumps were also lacking. The facility only has idle beds lying there with no single equipment to support a patient once admitted.
