Over 6,000 School-going Girls Impregnated in NFD Counties

The data is not only scary but worrying, the number of school-going kids who are pregnant has hit a record high and the reality is now hitting on most parents. A staggering 3,964 girls in Machakos County are now pregnant and other Counties have also recorded numbers in their thousands. The Machakos County Children’s Officer insisting that the data is not the actual figure on the ground as the number could be higher than what was captured. The Covid-19 pandemic could be a huge factor as students are currently at home and easily exposed to sexual predators. This data comes in the wake of a new report that listed Kenya among countries with the highest teen pregnancy rates with 82 births per 1,000 births.

Northern Kenya Counties have not been left out with huge numbers being recorded. Isiolo County had 980 confirmed cases, Wajir 1,241, Garissa 1,442, Marsabit 1,349, and Mandera 1,417. These numbers should worry everybody considering how reserved our society is. The drug menace has slowly hit our region, radicalization, and now teen pregnancy as the new errant. Is this a societal problem or parental failure, who do we blame for the rampant increase in teen pregnancy?
