Wajir Senator Dr Abdullahi Ali terms Governor Abdi’s Claims as ”False”

Wajir Senator Dr Abdullahi Ali Kabereta has termed claims by Wajir Governor that the county government is ready for the anticipated COVID 19 pandemic that is sweeping the world as ”false”. The senator who is a medical doctor by profession has rubbished the claims in a radio interview saying that ”Wajir County is neither prepared to tackle the pandemic nor doing anything to mitigate its devastating impact”. The Wajir County Governor has claimed severally through media briefings that his administration has set up an isolation center that is equipped to cater for any cases of COVID 19. Asked if the Senator should keep any personal difference between leaders aside and join other leaders in the fight against the pandemic, the Senator claimed that he has been sidelined in the decision making and the county administration ” is recruiting political appointees who will not be helpful in the fight against the pandemic”
Senator Kabereta claimed that he shared information with other leaders in a Whatsapp Group where the governor is a member and asked other county leaders to intervene so ”as to throw everything at Corona Virus and safe lives”.
Since a court case against his election was crashed by the Supreme Court late last year, Governor Abdi Mohamed’s administration has come under intense pressure to provide services and was labelled by the locals as the ” most corrupt administration in the region”. The anti-corruption agency has severally raided its finance offices and confiscated files. The governor has not been personally prosecuted for any corruption related cases, however some elected officials including the county Senator and other nominated politicians have accused the anti corruption agencies of ”bribery and protecting the county chief”.
Relationship between the Senator and the Governor has suffered few months ago when the Senator accused the county administration of Governor Abdi Mohamed as a den of corruption saying that ” corruption is rampant in the county” and the administration of Governor Mohamed Abdi Mohamud has sidelined him from the decision-making process. The Governor is yet to respond to this claim but senior personnel in his administration including former County Secretary who has since been sacked have been indicted for corruption-related cases and arraigned in court.
As Coronoa ravages the world there is nothing in the County to show that it is prepared and in our investigation we were denied access to the area that the county government said was earmarked as an isolation center. There is nothing visible across the sub counties and medical staff working in the health centers who declined to be identified said that they have not been provided with protective equipment and there is nothing they can do in case COVID19 attacks their patients. They have appealed to the county government to provide them with masks and other personal protective equipment as they will be in the front line to assist any patients who may come down with the virus.
