NEP Governors Must Hang Their Heads in Shame and Resign
Today USAID pledged to give food aid to hundreds of thousands of residents living in 9 counties who are starving. Garissa, Wajir, Mandera Marsabit and Isiolo are among them. USAID will distribute this through the food-shaming enterprise, World Food Pogram (WFP), that has run down farmers’ livelihoods through distributing substandard free food to potential customers. WFP achieves 2 broad aims by distributing surplus food from the USA, much of which may be unfit for human consumption, by the time it arrives on the shores of Kenya. One, it cripples farmers and discourages them from feeding themselves, and two, it inculcates a culture of free food that is alien to the people of these counties and therefore demeans them while massaging theft of public money as county chiefs and their mandarins are used to factor this free food aid in their county budgets. WFP food aid is a perfect way to ensure poverty begetting poverty.
County chiefs must hang their heads in shame and resign if they have an iota of conscience. The fact that hundreds of thousands of their denizens are starving is a clear manifestation of leadership failure. If in the midst of the billions of devolved funds, they cannot uplift their people from abject poverty they have no business leading them and have no justification to draw salaries. It is a gross manifestation of leadership failure that they failed to feed a population of less than 3 million in NFD while purpoting to manage the billions entrusted to them. What more prove does one ask for? “USA Marafiki will continue these and other efforts to build resilience in Kenya to best support our Kenyan friends on their path to self-reliance.” says the US ambassador. America and the ambassador know very well that this is the complete opposite of building resilience. This is not only condescendingly subjecting masses of people to dependency and thereby disrespecting them, it is destryong livelihoods. This is not help. It is certainly not the help we need. The thieves who steal public wealth must die in shame. How on earth can one, on whose behalf they received billions of taxpayers money, die of hunger in the 21st century? This is the bare minimum they could afford. How much does one need to avoid abject poverty or hunger? What does one need to stay above the dreaded poverty line? If this catalogue of shame does not make our leaders cringe, they do not deserve to remain leaders and draw salaries.
Instead of investing in their farmers to feed their populations, paving the roads to ease transportation of harvest, finding and helping them with market access for their surplus, they are busy playing cheap politics with their lives. It is a shame that they are accepting food aid and their people are dying of hunger when they have received over 200 billion of public money. People of NFD should, by now, be entitled to monthly welfare aid from their county coffers as a safety net from abject poverty. These leaders should have forced WFP and other relief food organizations to either support farmers or leave the counties but the managers of these counties are clueless and not in touch with the realities of those who elected them. They watch as people die and animals, which are their lifeblood, perish. It is like they want our people to stay poor. I do not believe they are so incompetent and so uncaring that people die of hunger under their watch. I wish they were incompetent, at least we could claim that they did not know. But they are not, they know that the money they misappropriate is the money meant to safe these people from hunger and death. They are feeding their children 3 course meals in posh homes in comfy Nairobi. They know this is money meant for the people who are dying and whose animals are perishing. They travel first class unnecesarily and spend in 7 star hotels. They know the money they are spending is the money meant for these same people. So you tell me how do they deserve to stay in their positions and draw salaries from your money if all they do with it is misappropriate? There are things that are left to die gradually. There are things that are left to wither on the vine. But there are things that cannot wait. People dying in the midst of plenty is one of them and letting go those who are embezzling their funds is certainly a priority.
