Former Lagdera Member of Parliament Farah Maalim urged MCAs from the Counties of Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo, Mandera, Marsabit, Lamu, Mombasa and Tana River to pass resolutions banning Miraa. According to Mr. Maalim, Miraa has destroyed the lives of many young people and destroyed many homes as young people waste their time and money chewing the drug. He also notes that Europe banned the consumption, growing or trade of Miraa and that has saved quite a number of Somali youths who were immersed in the drug. Last year, Kwale County banned the sale and chewing of Miraa through a motion introduced into the house by Kasemen MCA Hon. Antony Yama. Nyandarua County is also planning to ban Miraa and the Governor has ordered for drafting of a legal document which will ban the sale and consumption of the drug. “Our youths are suffering from alcoholism and Miraa chewing and I will not allow this to continue as long as I am the Governor, ” said Governor Francis Kimemia.
