Garissa County Embarks on Identification of Children Living With Autism
Garissa County has embarked on a County-wide survey to identify children suffering from Autism. This comes after Garissa County became the first County in Africa to pass the Autism Education Motion which was sponsored by MCA Hussein Dagane. The motion which seeks to compel the County to set aside some cash to help special children who are suffering from Autism, which will include one classroom in all ECDE Classrooms. According to WHO two in every 40 children are suffering from Autism and most parents and teachers are not aware.
Autism refers to a broad range of conditions which is characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication. The motion seeks to help in identifying children with Autism at an early stage to ensure they receive the special attention they deserve to prosper. Hon. Dagane insisted that his motion sought to help the County plan well and no one is denied quality education because of being abled differently. The mapping exercise will be carried out in partnership Autism Lights Inc making Garissa a pilot County.
