”We will Forward Our Reports on Wajir County to the EACC” Say Senate Committee
There was drama today at the Senate as Wajir Governor and his Treasury team failed to explain how he spent Kshs. 1.8 billion during the FY 2017/18 as he appeared before the Senate Committee on Public Accounts. The details of the auditor’s report revealed serious un-procedural procurement and illegal award of tenders and contracts by the county. Irregular award of tenders and flaunting procurement rules were some of the concerns raised by the Senate committee. Sen. Moses Kajwang who is the chair of the committee questioned the lack of preparedness from the Governor who appeared before the Senators without several documents. The committee said that the Governor and his team were unable to understand basic laws relevant to counties. Moses Kajwang asked the Governor ”to send his treasury team for induction”.
The Governor was on the spotlight for a bloated wage bill with millions being paid in salaries and allowances. This is suspected to be ghost workers only known to the governor and his close cohorts. The Governor was unable to present the exact list of employees in the County to justify the huge bill. The Committee gave the Governor two weeks to submit the missing documents and promised to forward their report to the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission.
