Fatuma Gedi: The Lady who Rattles Men in Parliament

Today in Parliament the national assembly speaker was rattled by Fatuma Gedi, the Wajir Women Rep after she shouted down Majority Duale who was responding to a question asked by MP for Bura who is also the chair for Labour and Social Welfare concerning budgetary swaps that has disadvantaged the Gender Ministry. The speaker threatened to send her out appearing defeated by the Women Rep, a threat she appeared to laugh off.

Majority Leader who was on the floor was also rattled by her when she shouted him down when he belittled 420 million shillings that was moved from Gender to Education. In a swipe against his parliamentary colleague Rashid Kassim and in reference to the incident where the women rep was slapped by the Wajir East MP, the Majority Leader said he will not slap the ladies of this house even if they slap me. ” You can tell Fatuma I do not play the league of last week and I am not going to slap her” said Duale. Many thought he was lambasting the beating of Fatuma by Rashid Kassim last week and referring to him as a man who plays a lower league than the one Duale plays in while admonishing Fatuma to behave like a member of parliament when she comes to the chamber. Fatuma smiled at the swipe and some sitting close to her inform us that she said she is bemused by men scared of her.

Duale who has not publicly spoken on the incident has been under pressure from parliamentarians and people across the board to declare his stand against the shameful incident of last week.

Fatuma Gedi who many see as active and vocal more than the male MPs has borne the brunt of her colleagues’ rant for a long time that many say culminated in the beating by Rashid Kassim.
