Majority Leader who is also the Garissa Township MP Hon Aden Duale has accused the Garissa County government of a plot to conspire with a contractor to take 75 million contract on the relocation of Orahey market. The legislator claimed that their is a plot by the County Government to move the traders and displace them in exchange for contract money. Duale said the traders have been fighting the move for years and he has helped them seek the assistance of the courts. ”The county government has now touched a live wire and I will fight them in the open” said the legislator.
The MP said that the mothers trading at the market are like his mum. ” My mum bred me by hawking staple foods such as chapati and I know what poverty means, I was bought my first shoes when I joined high school”.
The Orahey market shelters approximately 3000 small traders who sell merchandise ranging from groceries to clothes.
The MP tweeted his visit to the market where he assured the traders that the market will remain open.
Governor Korane has planned to move the traders to a new site to ease traffic congestion said the county government. Traders say they are happy with the move as they wanted to be moved from the road for a long time. Mrs Amina Abdi Daar who is the chair of the market traders said that they have agreed with the Governor to be moved and formed a committee to plan the move.
The Majority Leader and the Governor have had public disagreement over issues in the past and this latest spat will only sour an already bad relationship.
