NAIROBI, Kenya, April 26 – Newly elected Wajir West MP Ahmed Kolosh has extended an olive branch to his competitors in the just concluded by-election.

In his acceptance speech, Kolosh pledged to work together with KANU’s Ibrahim Sheikh whose successful petition of his August 2017 led to the Supreme Court upholding a High Court decision to nullify his win.

“I want to assure the people of Wajir West and my colleague Ibrahim, that this constituency will be one, that the people of Wajir West will be one and that we will all be working together for the benefits of the people of Wajir West. I am sure that his plan and manifesto combined with mine will be the best for the people of Wajir West,” Kolosh said.

Ibrahim on his part congratulated Kolosh on his victory and wished him well in serving the residents of the Wajir West.

“The people of Wajir West have made their decision, and the decision is Ahmed Kolosh, I would like to congratulate him and wish him all the best in his endeavors as the MP-elect for Wajir West and I call upon my supporters to keep the peace and work with him. I shall always be there with him, I shall always support him in any way that he needs me,” said the KANU candidate.

Kolosh who decamped to Jubilee Party from ODM retained the seat after he garnered 11,053 votes against Sheikh’s 6,532, according to the results released by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission which conducted the poll held on Thursday.

Even as this was taking place, Majority Leader in the National Assembly Aden Duale took the opportunity to bask in the glory of weakening the ODM party of its stronghold in the northern frontier region.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Duale who is the senior ranking state official from the region laughed off at the opposition stating that it was only a matter of time before the Jubilee Party turns the sole remaining legislator from the opposition party.

“Today is a happy day from the on-goings in the Wajir West by-elections; tonight the Jubilee family will have a new MP.”

“From the region where I come we had two ODM MPs, one we have taken and the only remaining MP by name in Wajir North so the whole of North Eastern is now red except one and it not because of the handshake, the ODM candidate disowned you. The people of Wajir West said we want Jubilee, we want Uhuru Kenyatta, we are tired of rhetoric,” he bragged.

This came as ODM through its twitter account congratulated its former member for the win.

“Congratulations Hon. Ahmed Kolosh on recapturing the Wajir West parliamentary seat. We are glad to have been associated with you and introduced to serious politics. Time to serve your people now,” read the post that elicited mixed comments from its followers.

Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi was among those who commented on ODM dwindling fortunes stating; “ODM once a proud and very powerful party now just trolls JUBILEE on Twitter…”

Kolosh was first elected on an ODM ticket in 2017 General Election but his victory was nullified by Supreme Court after a successful petition. Kolosh then switched party and joined Jubilee ahead of the mini poll.

ODM was forced to pull-out of defending its seat after its last minute replacement candidate in the race Mohamed Yusuf bowed out in what the party explained as a result of high-level consultations with Jubilee leadership to reciprocate what had happened in Ugenya and Embakasi South mini polls where the ruling party did not field candidates in favour of ODM.

But speaking after meeting with the Deputy President William Ruto, Yusuf distanced himself from the statement, explaining that ODM had nothing to do with his withdrawal but his decision had everything to do with his clan’s desires.
