Journalist Arrested For Insulting President
Somaliland police have arrested Abdimalik Muse Coldoon, a prominent journalist and human rights activist, at Burao city on Wednesday evening, April 17, 2019. The arrest confirmed by the journalist’s family indicate that he was arrested in Burao central market.
Abdimalik is famous for championing the rights of the voiceless, the plight of the less fortunate and is an advocate of good governance who has exposed corruption in government. He shares stories of the less fortunate with his global audience and has been of assistance to many. He has earned the respect of the people of Somalia through his selfless service and financial assistance to the poor.
His sister Sacdiya Coldoon has in a Facebook post claimed that while arresting him, police butt-stroked and beat him with their weapons. The family and Abdimalik’s lawyer said that they were not allowed by the authorities to see him.
Mr. Abdimalik Coldoon returned two months ago to Burao from Somali regional state of Ethiopia where he was invited by the Somali State of Ethiopia’s president during his inauguration.
In a TV program recently aired on HoryaalTV, Togdheer regional police commissioner Mr. Ahmed Ali Shabel confirmed that the police were in search of the popular journalist and will be arrested upon his return to Somaliland a claim refuted by the areas’s Mayor Mr. Hamza Mohamed Abdi who confirmed that there was no arrest warrant against the journalist.
Mr Coldoon, who has been a critic of the administration of the current regional president Musa Bixi and Abaarso Technical School, an instution set up by a white American former Hedgefund millionaire accused by scholars and elders of promoting immorality, has been taken to Hargeisa, the Northern headquarters. The court has ordered the police to take Abdimalik to hospital.
Abdimalik Coldoon was previously arrested by Somaliland for visiting and campaining for Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo. He was released after 3 months in custody after citizens raised a storm over what they said was injust and unfair detention.
Protest by the youth and the public demanding for the immediate release of the Journalist has been happening in Burao, Hargeisa and other places since his arrest.
