Services at Wajir county referral hospital have been grounded after two doctors attached to the facility were evacuated by the government following the abduction of their Mandera counterpart by suspected al-shabaab militants. Residents who spoke to journalists decried the rushed government withdrawal of the medics terming it unfortunate and illthought.”I have been here since morning and their is nothing forthcoming” said a patient at the facility.A spot check by NFD Dispatch indicated patients milling around the corridors waiting for services with most of them set for medical operations.
This comes a week after two Cuban doctors Landy Redriguez (Surgeon) and Assel Herera Corea (General prhysician) based at Mandera Referral hospital were abducted and one of their guards shot dead by suspected Al-shabaab gunmen on Friday last week.Rescue mission has been intensified with the military choppers seen hovering around the border between Kenya and Somalia.A group of elders have also left for Bula Hawa Gedo region in an attempt to deliberate and negotiate with their counterparts from Somalia so as to release of the two doctors.
The residents are now appealing to the government to redeploy the doctors and beef up security in the region.
