ODM WITHDRAWS from Wajir West by-election
ODM Director of elections and Minority whip Hon. Junet Mohamed has announced his party’s withdrawal from the Wajir West by-election that was set for April 25. The party in a tweet says move is in response to Jubilee pullout from Ugenya, Embakasi South polls.
The by-election occasioned by the nullification of Mr Ahmed Qolosh’s win by the courts was expected to be a 3 horse race between Ahmed Qolosh, Ibramim Sheikh and Prof Mohamed Elmi. Prof Elmi who was contesting on an ODM ticket was not at the press conference where his party announced the withdrawal. At the press conference Hon Junet, on behlaf of the party leader, said after high level consultations, they have decided to reciprocate Jubilee’s gesture of not fielding candidates in Ugenya and Embakazi South.
This surprise withdrawal by ODM leaves Ahmed Qolosh of Jubilee, Ibrahim Sheikh of Kanu and Daud Ali of Ford-Kenya in the ballot.
Earlier there were talks between Kanu and ODM that did not lead to an agreement. ODM was targeting Ibrahim Sheikh to withdraw from the race to tilt the scale towards their candidate, a discussion that did not bear fruits. Political analyst claim that after the Kanu candidate declined to withdraw from the contest ODM strategist sensed defeat and hence the withdrawal.
ODM did not say who it will support in the election only wishing the best man to win but pundits, claim that the high level talks between Jubilee and ODM gives an indication that the party supporters will vote for the Jubilee candidate Ahmed Qolosh.
