Dr Kuti’s Litany of Broken Promises
By Mwalimu Huqa Ali Huqa,
The politics of deceit and gimmicks has once again emerged when teachers came out calling for support from all corners. Teachers are an important cog of society’s wheel who have from time to time played a crucial role in the lives of all. The craftiness and wit employed by the Governor to sabotage the important fundraiser while pretending to have been in the forefront is a clear indication of his political gamesmanship which most often seems to burn others before it backfire on him. This is not the first time the Governor has abandoned teachers only that this time he recruited others in his foul play and appeared to clean himself of the mud.
The first time Dr. Kuti ventured into politics and clinched the constituency seat occupied by Hon. Charfana Guyo Mokku, he was banked on the massive network of teachers from all corners of Isiolo County. This was a group that has its roots firmly in the grassroots and whose prowess and loyalty could never be questioned. Some of these teachers sacrificed their classroom duties to campaign for Dr Kuti but the Governor still forgot them and continues to disregard them since coming to power. Governor Kuti has failed to offer employment to a single teacher in Isiolo County despite the fact that they applied in their numbers. About 104 teachers applied for different positions within the County Government but Dr Kuti hasn’t absorbed even a single one of them despite their experience, qualifications and most importantly their local knowledge of Isiolo. 18 candidates were shortlisted and interviewed for the County Officer for Education position, the 3 top were teachers but unfortunately were all dropped in favour of a candidate who was not even interviewed for the post. Governor Kuti openly rejected them despite the fact that they were the most qualified and experienced to run the docket. This is the last thing the teachers expected because going by all indications, this one position should have been given to a teacher due to their expertise and relevant experience required for the education docket.
Dr Kuti has not fulfilled a single promise of the numerous promises he made to teachers in general and principles in particular. In the last meeting with Principals, Dr Kuti pledged shillings 1 Million to local schools. This has not happened and there is nothing to suggest his administration will fulfill the pledge. Governor Kuti made a promise of shillings 1 million to support school heads to attend KSSHA conference. This is yet to happen. The Governor also promised a day workshop for 2018 candidates on marking technicalities of Kenya Certificate Secondary Education (KCPE). This has not happened for the students too. Food donations to schools and infrastructure support promised by him are as good as all the other sham pledges of his elusive 100 days promises.
Isiolo Teachers SACCO had gone through a very difficult and challenging period. They required a small push to help get them back to their feet again. All the leaders in Isiolo had been invited but Kuti again chose to politicize a noble event simply because Senator Fatuma Dullo had opted to spearhead the event by inviting the Deputy President Dr. William Ruto. Yesterday only Dr Kuti and Senator Dhullo accompanied the Deputy President to the fundraising. All the other county and constituency politicians avoided the fund drive at the instigation of the Governor. This a below the belt blow against teachers progress and the last Dr Kuti could do to them. Governor Kuti and his close political allies including; the two Isiolo M.Ps, Isiolo Women Rep, County MCAs, and all County officials attended the Kinna fundraiser but Dr Kuti instructed them to ignore the Isiolo Teachers Fundraising. He only attended the event not as a goodwill gesture to help the teachers Sacco but only because the Deputy President was in attendance and as the County Governor was obliged to attend.
Kinna women are Isiolo voters the same way Isiolo Teachers are and I can bet most of the women in Kinna are probably married to Teachers.
Senator Dullo attended both functions and exhibited political maturity. It beats logic that elected leaders boycotted the teachers Sacco fundraising event. This can only be something that was meticulously planned with and deliberately cooked by Dr Kuti. He instructed all the others not to attend the Isiolo Fundraising. Unfortunately this is the height of political immaturity and below par personalization of development.
Teachers need to wake up from their deep slumber and understand that Dr Kuti doesn’t have their interests at heart and they mean nothing to him. It’s time we unite as never before and refuse to be only of use to Kuti when he needs our votes. Let us join hands as teachers and build our future together outside the unreliable and unfortunately ungrateful government of Dr Kuti and his ilk. Isiolo deserves better and certainly Isiolo County teachers deserve a better ally.
