Governor Roba’s Statement On Karo Airstrip Refuted
A section of Mandera residents have come against the claims by Mandera County Governor that Karo airstrip is a neccessity for the county and accused him of presiding over unsafe air transport. Earlier the governor has said that the current airstrip is unsafe and ”planes are not type certisfied to operate from the airstrip”. Residents called upon him to stop flights from flying to and fro Nairobi if its not safe as he claims. One of the residents who identified himself Mr Abdi said the governor has to prioritise provision of essential services before he embarks on unnecessary mega project ” that is only meant to siphon public money into private pockets”. Abdi said that all the areas the governor mentioned have no water but ”we want to build an airport as resource looting project just like Dams or fence projects” .
Mzee Kullow who said he is calling from Rhamu said that ”instead of the administration hankering for the airstrip project that is not even a priority and will end up serving the interest of only a few people, the governor should provide us water and equip our hospitals”.
A vocal activist who has been an opponent of Governor Roba’s administration has termed the Governor’s speech as ”Pharaonic”. Known as Simba Hasheem, a brother to Mandera Women Rep Hon. Amina Gedow he termed the airport as unnecessary. In a facebook post Mr Hasheem said ”The governor has never called a press conference to address issue of drought and how to mitigate it. Typical pharaonic characteristic!”.
