Governor Ali Roba Refutes Claims on The Proposed Kora Airstrip
Governor Ali Roba of Mandera County has refuted claims he termed ”lies” on the controversial proposed airstrip in Kora saying that Mandera needs an airport that isa safe and secure. ”As a pilot who understands about aircraft safety, the type of planes that operate from Mandera airstrip are not type certisfied to operate from a short gravel way as it is and that is a categorical statement” said the Governor. ”The risk factor to the people I represent is very high and I feel tense whenever a plane is landing or taking off from Mandera airstrip as I undestand a small misstep on safety could result in disaster affecting not only the air passengers but also communities living around the airport” continued the Governor. He refuted claims of people who said that residents are opposed to the construction of the proposed international airport. ”I met the people of Wargadud on my way to the funeral of former County Council Chairman Mzee Abdi Jibo may Allah forgive him and spoke to them about the land where we intend to construct an airport and have all agreed and given their consent” Said Governor Roba. He said there are no complaints from the people of Wargadud regarding the construction of the airport.
The Governor said the land size of the proposed airstrip is 2kms in length and 6kms wide.
”Disagreement between bussinessmen Haji Mohamed Rashid Dakka, Haji Samow and Haji Hassan Baricha over the contract that ended up in the courts has delayed the construction of the airport and the funds that were lying in the account for more than a year returned to the treasury” Said Roba. He said the airport fiasco is as a result of disgreement between the businessmen and those peddling lies that Wargadud, Libaxiya, Oda, Lafey and other places refused the airport construction are inciting communities. He said its only Libaxiya that declined the constrution of the airport and this was after the community in Libaxiya was ”incited and misled” about the contruction. The people of Libaxiya were ”lied” to by persons with ulterior motives and ”I did not want my administration to get involved in that and I stopped it” he said. The Governor angrily dismissed claims that he is grabbing land.
He claimed that former deputy governor candidate Abass Hajir has passed a clip inciting Mandera County communities to a section of the media. The Governor has called on the communities living in Mandera to keep the peace and live in harmony.
