Garissa Senator Calls On Locals To Take Arms Against Alshabab

The Garissa County senator Hon Yusuf Haji has called upon locals to take arms and fight alshabab. Addressing a gathering in Masalani a visibly angry Haji has questioned how the security personnel working in the subcounty cannot curb the alshabab menace? ” The military, GSU, RDU and police personel working in the sub-county out number even the residents why are they not defeating alshabab and instead turn against innocent cattle herders” asks Hon Haji. The same sentiment was echoed by the area member of parliament Hon Safia Abdinoor and the deputy governor H.E.  Abdi Daqane. Daqane said the security officers get intelligence of the presence and planned actions of the alshabaab and choose to do nothing. ” We will not accept to be turned away from our homes by alshabab. The security forces will either be sent back to Nairobi and locals will defend themselves or the government will resolve this probably” said the deputy governor. The area mp strongly condemned the disappearing of citizens by Security forces. Hon Sofia warned security forces against beating innocent citizens. ” If you beat citizens without a reason they will retaliate and that is a recipe for chaos” said the area mp. ” We will not accept our children and people to be disappeared and urge those responsible to desist” she said. She said due process of the law must be followed and people produced in court without delay when arrested. ” We have people whose whereabout is not known 6 months one year down the line and we will not accept such injustice” Said Hon Sofia.

This comes a week after some herders were brutalized by Security personnel working in the area. According to some of the seriously injured herdsmen we Spoke to the heavily armed security personnel descended on them after undressing them and brutalized them with sticks and the butt of their guns. In the melee over 200 heads of cattle was lost. The same week 3 men were allegedly killed by defence forces in Mandera county

Hon Haji asked the government to relieve the security in the area of their guns and instead give it the wanainchi to fight alshabab. He said the security officers deployed in the area do not want to do the hardwork and instead turn on the innocent herders ” I will lead the fight against Alshabab and I urge the government to give us the arms” said Haji. ” We will together with the area mp and deputy governor meet with the Interior, Defence Secretaries and other heads of security to resolve this issue” Hon Haji continued.
